Continuously improving the GGL certification scheme

GGL is progressing the recognition of its RED Module under the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED II/III). The module has been developed to align with the core GGL certification standards while incorporating the latest European legislation and implementing regulations. Once recognised, it will support certification of all solid biomass and address additional regulatory requirements, including the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

The stakeholder consultation on the revised GGL Documentation has been completed. Feedback from participants, Certification Bodies, regulators, NGOs, and the Advisory Council has been reviewed and, where appropriate, incorporated into the adopted documentation. A summary of all feedback and GGL's considerations is available for download.

Minor updates and clarifications have been published across several GGL documents on July 6 2026. These include improvements to FIT/FIP requirements, GHG default values, chain-of-custody requirements, moisture measurement provisions and supporting documentation. Stakeholders are invited to review the published versions and provide feedback before the documents become adopted.

Some documents have been edited and updated, which GGL and its Advisory Council consider minor. However, for stakeholders under FIT/FIP, these edits and updates will have implications, such as:

Applications from new Certification Bodies are temporarily suspended until October 1st 2026, while GGL focuses on supporting the transition of existing Certification Bodies to the updated certification scheme. During this period, training, accreditation updates and harmonisation activities are being carried out to ensure consistent implementation of the revised documentation. Applications will reopen after the temporary suspension period.
